On THURSDAY 17 SEPTEMBER, from 09:15 – 13:15 CEST (Air Room Hall 6), PHISHES is organising a session at the REMTECH CONFERENCE to explore how integrated modelling approaches can help bridge the gap between soil health data and informed soil management.
Soils provide essential functions and ecosystem services, yet their capacity to deliver them is increasingly affected by multiple pressures, including contamination, land and water management, and climate change. A key challenge is to move beyond the collection and monitoring of soil health data towards quantitative and predictive approaches. Contributions will address processes and modelling approaches at different spatial scales and across diverse environmental contexts, including agricultural catchments, urban areas and contaminated sites.
The session will present applications from PHISHES real-life case studies in the Czech Republic, Poland, the Netherlands and Sweden, addressing challenges ranging from climate change and water quality to agricultural management, Nature-based Solutions and PFAS contamination and remediation. Specific contributions will also examine the filter function of agricultural soils and the development of modelling frameworks for predicting soil functions. Complementary perspectives from the SOILPROM and ISLANDR projects will broaden the discussion on modelling pollution impacts and integrating soil health and ecosystem services into contaminated land management.
By bringing together different modelling approaches, environmental challenges and case studies, the session aims to discuss how quantitative predictive tools can translate soil and environmental data into evidence for assessing management practices and supporting more informed decisions for soil protection, sustainable land management and the preservation of ecosystem services.
